Meerkats!

Dominic loves meerkats and we hit all three exhibits at the San Diego Zoo on Christmas Eve. Here are some of the pictures:

DominicsFamily & Friends: If anyone would like a high-res version of the photos, let me know and I'll e-mail them out to you. (This goes for any of the photos on The Blog of Dominic.)

Potty News and Other Milestones

More news on the kids. They have made really large strides these last few weeks before the New Year.

After Jocelyn’s first exploration up the stairs, she struggled for a couple of days to completely master climbing the stairs and could not seem to get above 2 or 3 stairs. Then she saw the cat on the mid-point landing of the stairs. Desire and incentive play a large part in our life and Joss had the desire to see the cat and therefore the incentive to climb the stairs. She made it all the way to the landing as DominicsMom watched her. Then the cat slipped past her on her way down to eat. Apparently the look on Joss’s face was classic as she made the great effort to climb the stairs and then had the object of her desire brush by her on the way down… After that incident, she has climbed all the way to the second floor (accompanied by one of us!) several times now. She usually heads to Dominic’s room as he has all the toys.

I still have to find the kid’s gate and install it….

Well, we had another first of sorts last night… We are trying to potty train Dominic and have been actively doing so for the past two months. We haven’t pushed too hard as he wasn’t too interested initially. We give him a cookie when he sits down on his toilet and have promised him more cookies if he actually makes pee-pee or poo-poo into the toilet. Well the other day I was giving him a bath when I saw him look down at his pee-pee (nice technical term that) and noticed a small up-welling in the water. He was peeing into the bath. I asked him if that was what he was doing and he said no. (Little liar…) I asked him if could make pee-pee into the bath, so he stood up, made a bit of a face and then pee’d into the water! I clapped my hands and called him a good boy as this was the first time he had pee’d on command for us (then I added a bit more soap to the water.) When we were done, I dried him off and then asked him if he could make pee-pee into the toilet. He nodded yes and then stood in front of his toilet. After a moment, he let go with a small stream! We were very excited and Dominic got a bunch of cookies. Subsequently Dominic has made pee-pee into the bath and his toilet several more times.

(Side note for the girls: All guys pee in the shower so Dominic peeing in the bath is not that unusual. It’s very convenient because the urge to go usually only happens after you’ve started to run the water and it’s gotten nice and toasty. Stopping to go pee would mean shutting off the water, going pee, and then having to start over getting the water to the right temperature or leaving the water running which is a waste of water. This is a real pain, particularly if you have already disrobed and its cold in the house! Other causes of peeing in the shower occur because once you step into the shower and get wet, the urgent urge to pee will hit you. Now most guys do stop peeing in the shower when they get older. I promise I have not done so since I was a little boy-ish!!! Really, DominicsMom, you have nothing to worry about!)

On to the point of all this. Last night I was giving Dominic a bath and he announced to me that he had to go poo-poo and pointed to the bath. (DominicsMom was downstairs with Joss making a bottle for her) I said no, make poo-poo in the toilet. I didn’t really pay attention because Dominic will often ask to sit on the toilet, he knows he will get at least one cookie and if he looks cute enough, sometimes he gets a second one. No problem, he continued on for a bit, playing in the bath. So I eventually took him out, dried him off, and placed him on the bed to put on his diaper and pajamas. He again said he had to go poo-poo and punctuated it with some gas, which sounded very, lets say wet. So I picked him up and took him to his toilet.

Now, for those faint of heart, I’ve written two versions as things get a little disgusting (and a bit graphic.) Skip down to read the short, sanitized version. To read all the details, highlight the blank portion of your screen under this paragraph (place your mouse curser under this paragraph, then hold down the left mouse button and drag it down to the bottom of the blank portion). I’ve changed the color of the font to black so it won’t show. Highlighting the blank portion of the screen will make it appear.

At his toilet I sat him down, but he said “No, no” and stoop up and assumed his position. Since he could stand, Dominic has always stood to poop. He’s had some, let’s say issues, with pooping so we didn’t seek to change this. But now he wants to poop standing up. In this case, I didn’t think that he would be able to do anything as he’s always made a lot of grunting noises previously. This time he was serious and actually had to poop, I just didn’t know it. I tried to arrange him a bit, just in case. Standing on top of his toilet was too shaky, so he got off. Turning him around so that he faced away from the toilet and his butt hung over the toilet a bit did not give him anything to lean against and he turned around. So he ended up leaning over his toilet and holding onto the bathroom cabinets (like a tired or drunk guy about to pee in the toilet) and made some faces. I wasn’t really too worried as I still did not think he would do it. But once again, desire can be a huge incentive! The desire this time was for a cookie (he really likes the circus cookies, you know the Mothers Brand white or pink animal cookies with the sprinkles on them.) As he worked at it for a bit, I lost interest (still not thinking anything would happen!) and turned to watch the TV. Then I heard a wet plopping sound. I turned and there was a big log sitting between his legs and a mess on his behind…As I wasn’t ready for this, I called for him to stand still as I went for the wipes. When I turned back, he had backed away from the toilet, but stepped into his poop. Yuck! I called for help. So it was a big mess, but we couldn’t let on as we wanted to encourage his pooping. I wiped up his feet and then the floor as DominicsMom dropped him back into the tub to clean his feet. Once everything was clean, we gave him cookies and dressed him, praising him the whole time. This was the first time he willingly pooped on command. Hopefully he will continue to advance and we can finish potty training him! I’ll have to work on the sitting down to poop thing, I think that will take a bit as he has had some pooping issues in the past.

(Sanitized version: )
In short, Dominic has always stood to poop and did so this time, pooping on the bathroom floor in front of his toilet. After a bit of excitement, we cleaned him up and gave him some cookies. This was the first time he willingly pooped on command. Hopefully he will continue to advance and we can finish potty training him! I’ll have to work on the sitting down to poop thing, I think that will take a bit as he has had some pooping issues in the past.

The Zoo

This year we decided to stay home for Christmas and hopefully establish a couple of traditions. On Christmas Eve we went to the San Diego Zoo and actually managed to get out the house pretty quickly that morning. Our first stop was to see the meerkats, Dominic loves them. There were only two in the first exhibit, but the zoo has three different exhibits and I think we hit them all. After this we took the bus tour which allowed us to see the majority of the zoo without having to walk for 3 miles. Dominic was thrilled to see the polar bears and elephants. After the tour we saw some camels, ate some lunch, and saw some more meerkats. We then walked down one of the canyons and saw some big cats. We finished up at the gorilla enclosure, which was located near the pygmy hippos (notable in that their tank has lots of little fish, I don't think Dominic noticed the hippos.) We all had a great time and we ended up staying a lot longer (4 hours) than we expected to (2 hours). Both Dominic and Joss were very tired and both were asleep within 5 minutes of getting back into the car.

This is a bad angle, the candy cane is actually a few inches away from the statue.
For our trip to the Zoo, I was able to open one of my Christmas gifts a bit early. I received a Panasonic Lumix FZ7 camera and this was my first opportunity to use it! Its a great camera and is a huge improvement over our first camera, which while nice has a large time lag between photos. With the FZ7 there is barely a pause, even with the flash on. I was really excited to try it out! It is from the same family as DominicsAunt Laurie's camera, but it doesn't have all the features that hers does. For the gear-heads and computer-types, it has a Leica 12x optically stabilized zoom lens, 6Mp resolution, 30 fps VGA video, and is really quick between shots. I almost filled two 256 MB memory cards at the zoo, so a couple of days ago I purchased a 1 GB memory card. I'm still exploring all of its features.
Whew! Got that geek computer stuff is out of my system...

Thanksgiving Photos

I'm just now getting around to sorting and titling the rest of our Thanksgiving photos, its a busy time of year...

I believe it was on Saturday that we all went to the Portland Children's Museum, located near the Portland zoo. The Children's Museum is a set of hands on exhibits for kids, where they can play with water (making channels in running water, playing with pipes), a construction site, and much more. Dominic had a great time and we had a hard time tearing him away from there (kicking and screaming actually.) I really did not know what to expect, but definitely recommend it to all in the Portland area.

Overall we had a great visit! The kids had a blast as did DominicsMom and I.

Cute Photos

For about a 1 1/2 weeks we took every opportunity that we could to take a good picture of Dominic & Jocelyn for our Christmas cards. We had very little luck until the Christmas party. Here are a couple of photos which, while cute, did not make the grade.

Papa Tom & Nana's Visit

I’m still way behind on my blogging – lots of pictures to post and stories to write. DominicsMom took the weekend to go see DominicsAunt Laurie, DominicsUncle Andy, and DominicsCousin Jake. To help me out, DominicsPapa Tom and DominicsGrandma Nana flew down from Portland (although I think they just wanted to escape the nasty storm that blew and knocked out everyone’s electricity.) Everyone had a good time and there were a couple of funny stories:

One afternoon, Nana and I were trying to put Dominic down for his afternoon nap. Of course, he wanted his ‘baby pillow’, the small blue pillow that DominicsAunt Rebecca had made for him and that he cannot fall asleep without. But it wasn’t in his room. So while Nana tried to keep him quiet, I looked all over the upstairs, then went and looked all over the downstairs.

Couldn’t find it.

Having a vague memory of Dominic taking it with him into the car that morning, I checked both cars (and had some horrible visions of the pillow falling out of the car at the local grocery parking lot…)

Not there either.

So I checked upstairs again, looking under every bed and in every closet.

Then the cars again.

Then downstairs under the couch.

About this time, DominicsPapa Tom, who was sitting on the couch and watching the Redskins vs. Saints game asked, “What are you looking for?” I described the pillow to him and the necessity of having it so that Dominic would sleep. Papa Tom stood up to look around the living room... Yep, he was sitting on the little blue pillow. There was some great rejoicing (and some muttering under my breath) and little Dominic was able to take his nap.

And an achievement:

This weekend Dominic was sitting on his Thomas the Tank Engine scooter and Jocelyn wanted to join him. Not wanting to share Thomas, he grabbed another walker for her to use. This one has a big happy face on it and it plays a very catchy little ditty every time it’s touched or it moves. Joss was enchanted. She played with it for a bit and pushed it around a little and would then crawl after it. At one point I picked her up and set her down behind it in a standing position while holding onto it. I rolled it slowly while holding on to her so that she walked behind it. Joss seemed to be agreeable with this and we went across the room a couple of times. The third time, I got her moving and then let go. She kept walking for 6 steps on her own! She had a great time and was laughing when she sat down. I turned the walker around for her and she crawled up, held on to the walker and then stood up on her own. She then pushed it and walked behind it for four more steps! This was a first for her and we all laughed and clapped for her, she was really excited.

We had another first this evening. Dominic was given a time out as he was rough housing too much with Joss, so we put him on the stairs (and had to listen to him whine for 3 minutes). Joss must have quickly forgotten being man-handled by Dominic because she moved up to the landing below the stairs to be nearer her big brother. At that point I turned to talk to DominicsMom. When I turned back she was three stairs up and working on her fourth one and was just below Dominic! Both DominicsMom and I were very surprised! I'll now have to rig the child gate...

I'll post some pictures a bit later.

Christmas Party

The Morneault Christmas party was held at the Solana Beach condo again this year. It makes a great setting for a party and this year I even made it down to the beach! There was some great food, great company, and we had another gift exchange this year (All the kids received their gifts early and they all REALLY made out...) I ended up with the magically levitating pen, which currently sits on my desk at work (its actually really cool, but it is the subject of another post...)

On to the pictures:

Thanksgiving Pictures

This Thanksgiving we made the trek up to Portland to see DominicsPapa Tom and DominicsGrandma Nana as well as DominicsUncle Lee and DominicsAunt Rebecca and little baby Cole. One of our stated intentions was to try and get a Christmas picture taken. Yeah right...we went through many attempts without one good picture...

Here are some of the pictures from Thanksgiving, although I still have not gone through them all!

I'll try to finish the rest of them up and post some more of them.

Requested Edits

Tonight a received a demand to remove a picture. Normally, I would ignore this type of request, freedom of the press and all that, but the request was backed up with a very persuasive threat. Here's the demand and threat:

Please take that horrendous picture of me off the internet (you know – the one where..[I'm].. in a red t-shirt). If you fail to comply with this request, I’ll start my own blog and let the world know what happened when you were 7. (Lee is past the age of prosecution, right?)

Pretty pursuasive. (Ok, I caved like a wet paper towel.)

So here's the replacement photo.

Introducing Jacob John

I've been very bad, I have not welcomed Jacob John into the family! Little Jake was born on Oct 4th to DominicsUncle Andy and DominicsAunt Laurie. All have been doing well, although the little guy doesn't always like to take a nap! He is doing all the normal baby things, eating, pooping, sleeping, and repeat every 2 hours. Jake has begun to really notice his surroundings, his playmat, toys, and the occasional funny face that Andy makes.

Here are some photos! DominicsMom just received some new photos and I will post them as soon as I can.

Cat Scratching

Tonight, we were getting Dominic ready for bed when he saw the cat, Penelope, scratching herself on her ear with her hind leg. He was enthralled... DominicsMom and I listened to Dominic say, "Scratching, scratching, scratching" for a full 20 seconds. Then DominicsMom started to laugh and I turned around. Dominic had grabbed his foot and was rubbing it up against his head! It was pretty funny to watch him 'scratching'. He kept scratching for a minute, then got off the bed to see the cat.

A few minutes later, I was lying on the bed, innocently mind you, when Dominic climbed onto the bed, stood up, and put his foot up on my ear. He was trying to scratch my head! Well, I put a stop to it quickly and then DominicsMom suggested, "Scratch Daddy's butt!" (Ah, the things we teach that little guy.) So he promptly began to rub my rear with his foot...

I'm currently working on all of the Thanksgiving and Christmas party photos...I'm falling behind! Here is a cute picture of Jocelyn to hold everyone.
